ASPEN
America: Now and Here has had a number of activities and programs in conjunction with the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Art Museum. In summer 2011, ANH founder Eric Fischl was the Harman-Eisner Artist-in-Residence at the Aspen Ideas Festival where he was joined by artist Eames Demetrios in conversation about “Discovering America through Art and Artists” at Aspen’s Baldwin Gallery and discussed the vision and founding of America: Now and Here with the Institute’s Arts Program Director, Damien Woetzel. Fischl and Woetzel came together once again in conversation about ANH in October 2011 to the Aspen Institute’s NYC audience at Hunter’s College Roosevelt House before traveling to Beijing in November on the first ever US-China Forum on Arts and Culture with fellow cultural ambassadors Yo-Yo Ma, Meryl Streep and Alice Waters, among others.
From October 21 through November 20, 2011, the Aspen Art Museum invited local artists and writers to engage in a creative dialogue about America, exploring how their experiences, ideas, and points of view shaped the work created in conjunction with the 2011 Roaring Fork Open exhibition.
The Aspen Art Museum’s 2011 Roaring Forks Open included: “The 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Riders” by Shelly Safir Marolt, “Each One Teach One” by John Cohorst, “Tattered Glory” by Kim Floria, “Fungus” by Annette Roberts-Gray, and a mixed media piece by Joel Belmonte.
A longstanding tradition, the Roaring Fork Open (RFO) is the Aspen Art Museum’s biennial exhibition open to all artists residing between Aspen and Glenwood Springs. The first RFO was held in 1980, and since then hundreds of artists have shared their work here, connecting with patrons, museum members, and other artists in the region. The event is a critical part of the AAM’s ongoing investment in sustaining a vibrant arts community. In 2011, the AAM collaborated with the America: Now and Here project to engage Roaring Fork artists in a dynamic and creative dialogue about America. The AAM exhibited 125 new works by Roaring Fork Valley artists who shared individual experiences, ideas, and points of view about our country. Read about the inspiration for Annette Robert-Gray’s piece Fungus on our blog.
