Brand appraisal company deemed a fraudPublished: 29 Jul 2009 08:02:01 PSTBy Huang Jingjing and Wen Ya World Executive Group (WEG), a brand appraisal company, denied yesterday claims that it is a bogus company providing false information.According to a convention of over 20 experts and scholars, WEG, which claims to have been started by Robert A. Mundel, a Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics, and Haisen Ding, is essentially fraudulent.“We have voluntarily met together Tuesday in Beijing to uncover these frauds, and plan to submit a petition to the Ministry of Commerce,” Zhu Xiangqun, an initiator of the convention and Deputy Secretary General of Brand Asia Committee, told the Global Times yesterday.WEG responded yesterday that those experts were “degrading” them through “malicious and false statements” and broke the Criminal Law.“We have already reported the case to the police,” Ke Ke, an employee from the publicity department of WEG, told the Global Times yesterday.But she said the company refused any interview and would hold a press conference after the case was solved.According to WEG’s website, it was established in 1999 in New York, and has a think tank of talents from world famous universities including Harvard, Yale, Oxford and Cambridge. It claims to have set up a branch company in Beijing in 2003.Since 2004, the firm has annually ranked China’s 500 most valuable brands under the logo of the World Brand Lab.Among the top 500 announced in June this year, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China topped the list with a brand value of 125.09 billion yuan ($18.31 billion) and Goldenapple in China, a sports goods manufacturer, ranked last with a brand value of 801 million yuan ($117 million).However, the identity of the company and its qualifications to make such appraisals has been doubted.“After comparing the brands ranked by the company for the past six years, we found that there are loopholes in the ranking,” Zhu Xiangqun said.For example, brand value rank rises and falls suddenly, big companies with billions of brand value disappear from the list and some small unknown companies are listed instead of big ones, he said.Changhong Group Corp, a leading company in household electrical appliances, ranked 6 in 2008 with a brand value of 65.59 billion yuan ($9.60 billion) and vanished from the 2009 list.“We’ve never been in contact with the lab, let alone to know their list,” Liu Haizhong, planning department manager with Changhog Group Corp, told the Global Times.“We’ve never paid attention to their ranking list, unless the ranking list companies hurt our company,” Liu said,“I believe consumers and users have the final say on our brand value.”Chunlan Group Corp, also in the electrical appliances industry, was ranked in top 50 with a brand value of 16.01 billion yuan ($2.34 billion) in 2009. However, in 2008, Chunlan was missing from the list.“Any assets appraisal company that is registered in China is required to have the word appraisal in its name, but the WEG doesn’t have this. It is clear that the company has no right to operate in assets appraisal in China,” Wang Jing, general manager of the Beijing Brand Appraisal Company, told the Global Times yesterday.She also joined the meeting Tuesday. She said she isn’t at all worried that the group would file a lawsuit against her.“I didn’t slander them because they’re business rivals. I just told the truth.
