EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW

Story creates mental space between people, and stories create community. Story teaches us empathy, and teaches us how to live with each other, hopefully in more open and accepting ways. Even if it just teaches us for a moment some small thing that we didn’t understand before, it opens the heart. Art heals people–I don’t understand, with all the evidence, why that’s not embraced more. I don’t believe art is elitist. I’m a democrat, with a little “d.” It makes me doubt people’s goodwill, especially our politicians, when they don’t understand that art leads to a way to raise better human beings. I believe that–I believe it too much.
