ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Fabric of Society
– This work came about very spontaneously, after having spent some time exploring altered books. Without being overt (the title already does that), I was very excited about merging the very similar materials of book pages and wasp nest. The intensity of change and transition depends upon one’s perspective; it can be seen as dramatic, traumatic, and negative, or it can be seen as natural, organic, and beneficial. Societies change just as surely as the rest of the natural world.
Blank Slate
– Also the result of explorations with altered books. With this piece, however, the image had come to me many years before, and had been recorded in an old sketchbook. The obvious connection is certainly between books as places of ideas, and the brain as a place of ideas… of course, we don’t see any manifestation of those ideas yet. It speaks to the potential for ideas. Potential is, to me, one of the most powerful places to focus our energies, individually and collectively.
Tenuous
– I like to think of this arrangement as a statement about the relationship between the physical and the spiritual.
