Title: Poultry Suite: White #22
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My most recent photographic studies began as an elegy to my father’s obsession with raising chickens in an urban environment.

In my simple gesture of recording images of his favorite breeds, I began to see that as a body of work, these studies revealed more than a decorative pride of plumage. Regardless of their breed, the birds revealed a common strength and an uninhibited and instinctive free spirit. I had done something common in an uncommon way and the result was simple, direct and oddly compelling. And so in picturing America: Now&Here it seemed fitting to submit the Poultry Suite as inspiration for our defining and promising moment in history. The chicken as a Poetry of Everyman: proud, hopeful, and individual.
EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW
Each photograph is an image that has traveled right through me. Up through the flinch of that shutter that syncs with the pressure of my finger to my brain and out.

It’s an emotional letter that first I jot down to myself. It’s a musing about the fragility of an antiquity, a reaction to the humorous and sometimes elegant presence of an iconic chicken or owl, or the total seduction that immerses us in a fashion photo. It’s the feeling of conjuring and capturing the power of celebrity. I hope my work will illustrate that a very common thing can be done uncommonly well.
