Title: Geography of Diamonds
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
miles and miles of diamonds
everywhere i go
miles and miles of diamonds
pave an endless road
like gravel underfoot
suffer those whose riches that we took
black days, black gold
we are crowned in the spoils
endless wars, empire of oil
black as days of old
a continent of discontent
always the darker land
heart of carbon compressed
and ground into the sand
and from its shores and through its chains
rose an empire still
people held by diamonds not by will
black days, black gold
we are crowned in the spoils
endless wars, empire of oil
black as days of old
diamonds crossed the rubicon
and they tumbled out of rome
strung on a telegraph
oh a thousand miles from home
the further you are spread without
the further you are spread thin
conquered by the vanquished from within
black days, black gold
we are crowned in the spoils
endless wars, empire of oil
black as days of old
viva los captivos
flood the empire of orleans
mississippi rising
oh i am swimming on my knees
a poverty of lime and gin
the poet of sugar cane
empires made of diamonds all the same
black days, black gold
we are drowning in the spoils
end this war, empires of oil
black as days of old
EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW
People need to talk about music in some way–besides whether you like it or not. But I’ve always thought that you should categorize music on how it makes you feel. If you imagine you could walk into a record store and see a section called ‘break up.’ Or ‘sunny day.’ ‘Car ride.’ ‘Your mom just died.’
