Title: America (Beverly Pabon, U.S. Postal Carrier)

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

This is America, my America, the America I love and embrace, good, bad and indifferent.

EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW

I think one of the roles of art is to bring something new to the table, and to open people’s eyes a bit. That’s what it’s done for me, and that’s what I try to do. People call me controversial, but I’m not trying to be controversial, I’m just trying to do something different, new, and also something that feels natural for me.

How does art function in society? My belief is that art functions as a tool to communicate, a tool to convey how the artist views the world to those who are viewing the artwork. The purpose of art is to convey emotions, to show a uniqueness of a certain situation, to examine beauty in everything around us. By highlighting a letter carrier, someone who you’d typically take for granted just passing by, Serrano shows her in a different light, literally a glowing light that is seemingly meant to convey a more ethereal presence, something special. Marcel Duchamp showed us the way to see art in everyday objects. Many carry the torch.
