EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW

To be truthful I’ve never defined myself as an artist. I’m a writer. Do I create art? I do my best, but the word isn’t in yet. I don’t like the whole thing of oh, I’m an artist, and therefore all this is some special shit, it just does not appeal to me. I work at what I work at, and I try to do it well, and that’s it. I have no special call on people’s affections or attentions, any more than a great woodworker or a stonemason. Writing poetry is putting words together so that you can make them happy in company, and say something that has meaning to people.

I don’t recall what I said–I’m Phil Levine–but what you quote sounds like me.

I’d like to have a photo of me, a very old one, say at age 40. (Not really. But a photo would be nice.) Also, is there some way someone could read the whole interview? As I recall it was short. Thanks, Phil

I just wanted to say that Phil’s poem knocked my anklets off.
