EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW

The landscapes I’ve inhabited, the conversations that I’ve engaged in, the museums that I’ve visited, the food I’ve taken in, the music I listened to, all of what I’ve encountered out in the world accumulates. When I’m home, I can start finding the language to capture all that, to represent it. Poetry does more than represent. It allows us entry into language as a medium of communication, but also as something that divines all of our existence. A poem is an individual’s unique song, as they journey on earth.

I was only six when I moved to the United States from India. Moving to a new country, not speaking the language, and watching your family struggle financially forces one to grow up fast. I’ve learned to appreciate both my American and Indian cultures and value that diversity.
